El Rasillo de Cameros

2 · The elm of the square

The old elm that the inhabitants have kept as a symbol of the place stands out in front of the church. After more than 4 centuries, it has witnessed the main neighbourhood gatherings, has been a meeting point and good counsellor for all generations who have known it. In many Camerano towns, the elm at the square had a special meaning and until the arrival of the Dutch elm disease (grafiosis), the elms were common in towns and cities. However, this disease killed 90% of them. The inhabitants of El Rasillo are determined to keep this specimen alive, as it is the only mountain elm preserved in a square in all of Spain.
