Villanueva de Cameros

10 · Dinosaur footprints

The mountainous area of La Rioja, particularly in its Eastern side, is a paradise for palaeontologists and, above all, for the sighting of the dinosaur footprints.
On the access road to Villanueva, there is the Vuelta de los Manzanos Archaelogical site, where about fifty dinosaur footprints from the Late Cretaceous are kept. There are also other sites such as El Encinar (The Holm Oak) which is classified as Property of Cultural Interest and that of Los Colmenares (The Apiaries). In all of them are footprints of these large animals on the limestone rock and are a reminder of the local fauna hat inhabited the area millions of years ago.
